When I sat down to write this blog entry I had this great idea about new summer music ideas perfect for your wedding. In fact, that may have been the title of this blog, until I realised I was completely wrong about my favourite new summer love song. I’d been hearing Gin Wigmore on the radio (who hasn’t?) and her new single I Do. What could be more perfect than dancing under a marquee or with the sand beneath your feet with her sultry voice singing I Do over and over again? I was even a bit miffed that she hadn’t released it in time for MY wedding 51 weeks ago (but who’s counting?).

So I googled Gin Wigmore Lyrics and the second link listed took me straight to I Do. Now remember, I’d heard this song on the radio plenty, even singing along, it wasn’t until I read the lyrics that I realised that this wasn’t a true-love song, but a song about unrequited love -

I still do love you, why don’t you love me too?

...isn’t exactly gazing into each others eyes romantic.  Certainly not like my own first dance song - Such Great Heights by The Postal Service.

I am thinking it’s a sign that the freckles In our eyes are mirror images and when We kiss they’re perfectly aligned.

Now that’s a perfect song for gazing with adoration with your one true love, (Thanks Dragonfly for learning it for us!)

I didn’t write this blog to tell you I’m not a good listener (ie. totally mistaking the lyrics in “I Do”) or letting you know I have great taste in music (The Postal Service) or even telling you I really do have eye freckles, I do. I wrote this blog to open up a conversation on new music. New love music or just new music that you love.

There are a bajillion songs out there to choose from, classical classics - Mozarts Cannon in D, classics - We’ve only just begun by The Carpenters, internet sensations - Forever by Chris Brown, or even my own aisle choice - Lullaby by The Dixie Chicks -

How long do you want to be loved Is forever enough Cause I’m never, never giving you up.

But what you may need is new ideas, something original. So, a conversation, a discussion even, on new songs, new ideas and wedding music. I’ve started a “discussion” on Facebook and want to hear what music you’re having at your wedding, what song you’re walking down the aisle to and what song you’ll gaze lovingly into your soul-mate’s eyes to. Don’t worry, I won’t steal your ideas, I’m already married. But I’m sure other Brides-to-Be would love a few suggestions, after all this is what WeddingWise is all about - Brides helping Brides helping Grooms plan your perfect wedding.

I recently arranged to learn a song for a bride who agonised over the perfect song for her wedding ceremony.  At last, she settled on Blue October with their song “Congratulations”.  I read through the lyrics as I prepared to learn the song….and realised she could not have chosen a less appropriate song for her wedding!

    Here’s a sample:

I came to see the light in my best friend
You seemed as happy as you’d ever been
My chance of being open was broken
    And now you’re Mrs. him.

My words they don’t come out right
But I’ll try to say I’m happy for you
I think I’m going to take that drive
I want to give you something
I’ve been wanting to give to you for years
    My heart

It turned out the song was sung from the point of view of a man who has missed his chance with someone he loves, and now she’s “Mrs Him”, marrying someone else!  The “Congratulations” of the title is a bitterly ironic title - he doesn’t want to congratulate them at all, he wants to be with her!

Fortunately, when I informed her, the bride was able to laugh about it and we quickly decided on the beautiful (and not ambiguous) “One Day” by Opshop, followed by “Chasing Cars” by Snow Patrol, which were perfect for the love the bride and groom shared.
